High waisted denim has statistically been shown in a University of Missouri study to cause self esteem. Really, I made that up, yet it's true for me.
Some hourglass and pear girls really make high waisted jeans look good. And they can, with altering. For a lot of us, we are all legs and a short torso, like Gumby the claymation character. I'm not short or in the plus size realm, and on my frame, mid rise jeans are high waisted. Low rise are mid rise. High rise pairs of denim are 1800's corseted contraptions going up almost to my bra.
The extra fabric on my midsection with high rise jeans and some mid rise chunks me up. My figure is not only waist-less, it's bulky.
If you want to have any appearance of a waist, go low rise. Mid and high rise pants tend to look good on the few curvy girls with extra long, snake-like torsos.
