"Early Man:" A 2019 Golden Globes Snub

When I watched Early Man on HBO the past month, I was unaware it was an awards season contender.

A plucky cave man named Dug, his sidekick Hognob and the rest of their tribe face a grave threat to their simple existence. Lord Nooth plans to take over their land and transform it into a giant mine, forcing Dug and his clan to dig for precious metals. Not ready to go down without a fight, Dug and Hognob must unite their people in an epic quest to defeat a mighty enemy — the Bronze Age.
— Early Man

From Aardman Animations, the people behind Wallace and Gromit, Early Man is a wacky, very British claymation (stop motion) animated movie that’s very, very, very funny-weird. Two glowing clay thumbs up from me! The British-iest thing one can write about is cavemen challenging a more advanced culture to a soccer/football match.

The voiceovers are done by stars like Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston. You cannot pick a single “best of” actor here. The ensemble cast voicing the film is impeccable!

How might I review this film without giving away any of the jokes? I cannot. Watch it if you think Pixar errs a little too safe these days. The quirky humor is the same you loved in The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Ham night for pirates! LOL.
